This morning we went to Hailey's school for assembly. We were there to watch her receive an award for the virtue patience. I have not been to one of these events in a while and it was a real treat. Here's why:
The school gym was filled with exuberant voices of students from kindergarten to 8th grade. As the assembly began they all rose to their feet for prayer and to respond to readings from the Bible. It was amazing to hear these hundreds of children with their voices raised in unison in prayer. Later, as a special treat, the 2nd grade class recited a famous old Irish blessing. Their tender voices were so humble.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Hailey and Maria were asked to read one of the Prayers of the Faithful in Spanish at IHM's international. The prayers included other moms, dads and students reading in their native languages. There were prayers in French, German, Italian, Swedish and Russian. Hailey did a great job with her prayer. We were all really proud of her.

Hailey and her classmates enjoyed Field Day last Friday (kind of late in posting). Maria went over there too and took these photos.
I will ask Hailey to give me some commentary on these photos and update this post later. In the meantime, enjoy!

Tonight I had the distinct pleasure of watching my sophomore son in his Spring Concert. It washed over me in a fit of nostalgia which brings me to this photo:
That is the 1986 Concert Band from Statesboro High. Where in the heck did we get all those tuxedos?

Oh my... what is this?
Yep! That is me at 16 years old--the same age as my son is now! The caption gives the details... good times...

Ahh, one our favorite holidays of the year. Not only does Valentine's Day invoked a sense of love but it's great for kids! Next month all of us adults can get our St Patrick's on.
Here we find Hailey with friends in class playing (maybe it's clean up time).
Now Hailey is showing off her special Valentine's Day headband--complete with hearts!
Lastly, we see snack time! And, yes, those are in fact heart shaped jello snacks being devoured by eager, hungry little Pre-K'ers.

Superbowl--schmooperbowl. We've got BIRTHDAYS!
Hailey had her birthday party today at Jumpin' Jamboree, an indoor play gym. It was GREAT! Here is Hailey way up on top of one of the inflatables.
Later on there was pizza, cake and drinks.
Here is the "oldie but a goodie" song "Happy Birthday (Hailey)"
Happy Birthday Hailey!

Round two goes to... ST PIUS! Maria and I took the drive up to Kennesaw Friday night to watch St Pius play Pebblebrook in the second round of the AAAA HS football playoffs. It was a great game of defense where each time was trying to find a weakness. In the end came down to a handful of big plays on both teams and a nail biting last two minutes of the game where St Pius held the Pebblebrook offense on a 4th and short drive.

Maria also joined Hailey at Livsey today for their Thanksgiving Program. The photo's in the album show them doing a small production of Pilgrims and Native Americans.

St Pius traveled to Dalton High for round one of the Georgia High School Football AAAA playoffs. The school organized a charter bus trip from the school for the two hour ride up I-75 to the stadium in Dalton. I can say one thing: they like their high school football there. The stadium had several neat things going on including a giant blow up slide (like the ones you see at fall festivals and carnivals) and a large area right next to the field for "tailgating". Another cool aspect was that the football field was only that--no track running around it off set it from the stands. It made the game seem so much more fun since we were so close to the action.
I'd say St Pius brought as many football fans to the game as Dalton. And one of the parents (forgive me for not remembering their name) had made 250 or so Mayfield milk shakers. When the crowd got them going it was really loud.
Even the loyal "jungle" came out in force to beat their drums and rally with the cheerleaders and the band.
Dalton High gave it a great effort but in the end it was St Pius by two touchdowns and change. We all packed up and headed back to campus where we ran the bells (at about midnight--sorry neighbors!) to celebrate the victory. Next up: Pebblebrook High next Friday after Thanksgiving.

This weekend Maria and I are considering activities a plenty. My son's high school football team, St Pius X, is in the playoffs (AAAA--same as Statesboro HS who won the state title last year). This Friday we're thinking of heading up to Dalton HS for round one. Then there's a basketball tournament at Parkview HS (in Lilburn) Saturday that I want to go to. If I can get a quorum of teenagers then I'll offer to drive them. Our fall back plan is to see "Borat". Maybe I should just chill at home instead... :-)

SHS 20 Year Reunion (Sally Anne's camera) 103.jpg
I've been playing around with a new web browser called Flock. This is my first post from it as both a test (does it work) and also to share this (sideways) shot of the SHS class of 1986 in all our glory and splendor. Yeah, it's too far away to really see any level of detail. I'm dead center (head shot only) behind Carroll Kirkland in the red shirt, middle row. I also downloaded about a dozen total picture from Sally Anne's site and put them on my Flickr site. The link should work--let me know if it doesn't.technorati tags:shs, statesboro, reunion

This classic picture includes friends I've known a long time who came from both far and near to enjoy our recent 20 year class reunion.
In the middle is Matt P, who sometimes is affectionately called "Ped" (and unaffectionately "Jimmy" at other times). He's a successful husand and father of two and currently residing in South Carolina.
On the right (and sideways?) is long, lost Mark! He came into town all the way from the "windy city" where he dates the locals. It'd literally been a decade since we last saw him. Even so, we were joking and laughing like we'd seen each other the day before. Good times...

It's been about a week and I'm still recovering... :-) Here is a picture taken on the first night which was the casual event. Picture left to right: Peter B, Joe H, Mark M, Matt P, Bradd C, Bob D and me. I'm still collecting some additional photos so I'll post them as I'm able.

On page 10 of the SPX Spiritus there's a half page article and a picture of Ash singing with the chorus. He also recently went to Rome, GA to perform as part of a larger trip to Chattanooga, TN to attend an Opera.

Last Friday the SPX Marching Band performed the first part of their competition show to a standing ovation at the half time show. They were great and should feel very proud!
