My 2nd cousin is a race car driver

I read my local hometown paper, The Statesboro Herald online and found out that my cousin's son (my 2nd cousin, right?) is a successful local race car driver.

A few days later there was an even better article--with video.

Congratulations to Ricky Jr, Ricky Sr, Karen and Paige!

Update: A bit more from Southland Magazine. Ricky races at Screven Motor Speedway.

Spain win UEFA Cup 2008

I spent several extremely hot hours at the Brewhouse Cafe for a chance to join a large contingent of Spainards (my wife and son included) watching the UEFA Cup 2008. Spain defeated Germany in the final 1-0. Why does this deserve a post you ask? It was standing room only as you can see below...

Hailey Soccer - May 2008

Here are a couple of the photos from Hailey's next to last game. Maria shot some individual and team shots since our photo day was rained out this spring.

St Pius 20; Pebblebrook 18

Round two goes to... ST PIUS! Maria and I took the drive up to Kennesaw Friday night to watch St Pius play Pebblebrook in the second round of the AAAA HS football playoffs. It was a great game of defense where each time was trying to find a weakness. In the end came down to a handful of big plays on both teams and a nail biting last two minutes of the game where St Pius held the Pebblebrook offense on a 4th and short drive.

St Pius X 31, Dalton High 14

St Pius traveled to Dalton High for round one of the Georgia High School Football AAAA playoffs. The school organized a charter bus trip from the school for the two hour ride up I-75 to the stadium in Dalton. I can say one thing: they like their high school football there. The stadium had several neat things going on including a giant blow up slide (like the ones you see at fall festivals and carnivals) and a large area right next to the field for "tailgating". Another cool aspect was that the football field was only that--no track running around it off set it from the stands. It made the game seem so much more fun since we were so close to the action.

I'd say St Pius brought as many football fans to the game as Dalton. And one of the parents (forgive me for not remembering their name) had made 250 or so Mayfield milk shakers. When the crowd got them going it was really loud.

Even the loyal "jungle" came out in force to beat their drums and rally with the cheerleaders and the band.

Dalton High gave it a great effort but in the end it was St Pius by two touchdowns and change. We all packed up and headed back to campus where we ran the bells (at about midnight--sorry neighbors!) to celebrate the victory. Next up: Pebblebrook High next Friday after Thanksgiving.

Everybody's working for the weekend...

This weekend Maria and I are considering activities a plenty. My son's high school football team, St Pius X, is in the playoffs (AAAA--same as Statesboro HS who won the state title last year). This Friday we're thinking of heading up to Dalton HS for round one. Then there's a basketball tournament at Parkview HS (in Lilburn) Saturday that I want to go to. If I can get a quorum of teenagers then I'll offer to drive them. Our fall back plan is to see "Borat". Maybe I should just chill at home instead... :-)

Ga Southern at Furman

I just got back yesterday from a weekend football trip to see Ga Southern at Furman. Lee and I drove up together to meet Bradd (lives in Greenville), Mark and Matt (who rode up together from Columbia, SC). Ga Southern lost. It was good times, laughing, playing boccie ball and the like. Pretty cool. We ended up at a sports bars later on watching USC (almost) beat Florida.

TYSA U16 Boys - Game 5

A win is a win, even when it resembles "street rulz" soccer rather than officiated recreational league play. In this game we were extra proud of Ash who's hard press on goal resulted in the only score of the first half.

The boys later ended the game with a 2-1 win over NSA.

The season's pictures can be found here or by clicking through on any of the pictures above.

TYSA U16 Boys - Game 1

The first game of the season was a great start even though the officials never showed. Even with the game being unofficial, both teams played hard.

Dodgers with 11 straight wins... then I show up

In the classic style of my trips to California, I brought a little bad luck with me. A friend from work gave my son, Ash Jr, and I two tickets to the Los Angeles Dodgers game tonight. They're on an 11 game win streak and face the Colorado Rockies. My son jokes that the Dodgers will probably lose if we go. Laughs all around.

Later that night we are in the stands with about 45,000 die-hard Dodgers fans and, while they tied it up at 1-1, they did end up losing 3-1. This would not be so bad if (1) Ash Jr had not of called it, and (2) I also took the blame for the rain during the Rose Parade this year--the first time in over 50 yearsPosted by Picasa

Ash: Spring Soccer

This past Saturday and Sunday marked the first weekend of recreational soccer for our local Tucker Youth Soccer Association, also known as TYSA.
Ash is playing on the U-16 boys team and is seen here delivering a massive punt. The entire team all played very well and it was a wonderful weekend of sun and fun. Posted by Picasa

Rose Bowl 2006 - Part 2

The Rose Bowl Luncheon was held at the actual stadium after which we took a couple of pictures out front. Posted by Picasa

Rose Bowl 2006

Today I attended the Rose Bowl Luncheon in Pasadena CA. All I can say is W-O-W! It is like a pep rally and pre-game show all in one. The event included this year's Grand Marshall, Sandra Day O'Conner, along with the coaches, team captains, senior players, mascots, marching bands, cheerleaders, sportscasters and more. The event was covered by ABC with hundreds of attendees. The event was capped off with a small gift for all of the attendees--an official minature Rose Bowl helmet.
